Is my body getting the proper nutrients necessary to function at its fullest potential? Are my health struggles stemming from deeper-seated, systematic problems in my diet? On our quest towards ultimate wellness, these are questions commonly asked. They’re also ones Jules Miller considered deeply in the development of The Nue Co, her line of simple but sufficient supplements aimed at eradicating our most common daily ailments. With health-focused figures like Georgia Fowler and Gwyneth Paltrow on board, The Nue Co. could very well be the added benefit your body’s been looking for. But before you stock up on your supplements, read what the founder herself has to say about the The Nue Co’s take.
Where did the idea of The Nue Co. stem from, and how did you go about making it happen?
I come from a family where food is considered to be the first point of call when you’re sick. And when I developed IBS in my mid-twenties, I started to reevaluate the food I ate and began to take off-the-shelf supplements to help treat my symptoms. At one point, I was ingesting five to eight different supplements that ultimately made me feel even more sick as opposed to revitalized. My grandfather pointed out that whilst I dutifully avoided eating processed foods and sugar, I was still consuming a cocktail of heavily processed and artificially created supplements.
I dug a little deeper and found that as a general rule, 50% of a supplements ingredients are active while the other 50% is composed of synthetic fillers, bulking agents and processed ingredients. Nothing your body needs.
The Nue Co. was born from the belief that food should be our first, unadulterated source of nutrition and supplementation. We create our supplements by taking tried and tested vitamin formulations, remove all unnecessary preservatives and ingredients and replace the synthetic actives with powerful, organic foods. The result is real food that your body recognizes, easily digests and absorbs.
What are the most common struggles you hear from women when it comes to their health and wellness?
Everyone has a different relationship with their body and our products help improve the most common problems that women and men struggle with – sleep, gut-health, skin, stress, energy, etc. I find that most people just want a space where they can talk openly and comfortably about their issues. I mean it’s not everyday a company wants to talk about your IBS and gut-health!
How would you explain what supplements are and why they can be beneficial?
We know that the first best source is food, and second to that is supplements. Supplements should add to your diet and help aid in how your body functions properly when it isn’t receiving the nutrients it needs to function. We create supplements that are delivered in the most effective form and absorbed by the body. We aren’t designed to eat or digest chemicals, so they shouldn’t be in our supplements.
Can the word supplements and vitamins be used interchangeably? Any general misconceptions regarding to two that you can address?
Supplements aid in supplementing your routine with a blend of vitamins, minerals and amino acids to aid in the body’s natural functions. Supplements contain multiple ingredients whereas a vitamin is a more concentrated source of one nutrients.
Everyone has different routines and no body is the same, which is why I think we need to look at how our bodies work to find out which form of delivery works best for you. We kept this in mind when developing our products which can be found as a powder, pill, tincture or spray. We’ve always been focused on how to best deliver nutrients in the most potent form that is natural and safe on the body.
How about the term “wellness” in both a physical and mental aspect—what does it mean to you?
My relationship with wellness is constantly evolving as I learn more about my body + mind, and the food that gives me the most of what I need. Wellness is centered around how I’m feeling and my mood and making sure that I look after my diet. Without being cheesy, it’s important to be kind to yourself. Eating a bowl of kale will do you no good if you are starving after, in the same way that eating a bowl of pasta will do you no good if you feel bloated after. It’s all about balance.
What are some reoccurring, generally awesome ingredients that can be found in The Nue Co. supplements that are worth knowing about?
I like to think that all of our ingredients and products are amazing, but I’m a bit biased! We source our ingredients from sustainable crops from around the world and, wherever possible, we use organic ingredients - not only because organic foods are proven to be more nutrient-rich, but also because we want to support sustainable farming and clean soil worldwide.
There is no product on the market similar to our Prebiotic+Probiotic because of the science behind it. Most probiotic pill supplements contain live bacteria that require refrigeration to keep that bacteria alive. To make our product more user-friendly, we decided to use Lactospore! It may not sound the most pleasant, but the spores lie dormant until they’re “activated” in your small intestine. So no false promises of high doses that die in transit (or sitting on shelf for months) due to incorrect storing!
Let’s talk about digestion—why do we suffer from so many stomach issues, and how does Gut Health address some of them? Can you break down what probiotics do and why they’re helpful?
Unknowingly, a lot of us have been hurting our gut for a long time from eating processed foods that feed the unhealthy bacteria in our gut. However, we shouldn’t deprive ourselves from foods that we like and that’s when prebiotics and probiotics come into play. Probiotics are good bacteria that are either the same as or very similar to the bacteria that is already in your body. They help to support the growth and balance of the good bacteria against the unhealthy strains of bacteria in your gut. The right ratio of good-to-bad bacteria is necessary for effective digestion, while prebiotics feed the good bacteria and help it thrive. Aside from easier digestion, incorporating prebiotics and probiotics into your routine can result in higher energy levels and glowing skin.
What’s the correlation between diet and skin? How does Skin Food address that link?
What we put into our bodies is a direct link to our skin. Our Skin Food + Prebiotic heals your skin from the inside out with ingredients designed to boost your skin’s own collagen production while delivering natural antioxidants that boost your Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Zinc levels. All while feeding the healthy bacteria in your gut creating an overall balance.
Is there a correlation between our mental health and how we are feeding our bodies?
I was raised believing that eating well is the best form of medicine. There is a lot we still don’t know about the gut. What we do know is that our guts’ microbiome contains bacteria that helps everything from our immune system to our metabolism. Essentially, a healthy gut is the foundation to being physically and mentally happy.
How do you take care of your mental health? How about your physical?
I always keep note of my personal indicators to know when I am feeling my best. When I am in a good state of mind and at my healthiest, my skin is brighter and I feel more energized.
Working out gives me natural energy and keeps me centered, so I try to be active four times a week, even if that means taking a longer walk with my dog, Lola. My favorite places to workout my body and mind are Sky Ting and Inscape.
I also like to start my day with hot water and lemon before any food to kick start my digestive system and ease into the day. I try to cut out caffeine as much as I can, and instead opt for a glass of almond milk mixed with a teaspoon of our Energy Food + Prebiotic once I get to the office when I need a little boost.
